Clüster Duo: Vaalea Impi Flaneeraa Esplanadilla EP (rps-EP1) REVIEWS

"More discordant weirdness from Finland comes in the way of the Clüster Duo. This drums & keyboard duo offer us one 18 minute track of spastic expression. Like their labelmates, Jumala (a percussion & "windy instruments" duo), Clüster Duo have no interest in order, but prefer to spend their 18 minutes fucking shit up and creating mass-chaos. The drumming here is fantastic, totally free jazz-inspired. This whole EP (which is apparently a "teaser" for the forthcoming Clüster Duo full-length CD-R, a release I look forward to after hearing this) is like hearing two epileptics freakout while playing drums and keyboard. It's great and a lot of fun. This is some fucked-up shit that leaves me wanting more. Nice." 7/10 - Brad Rose

"The project formerly known as Jumala has definitely gotten its style
more together. Vaalea impi is a strange fusion of drone-waves, thin
buzz
and muted drumming. Despite the name, this is a strongly individual
piece and not an observable continuation of the similarly-named Jumala
track. Even though the music is still rather free-form, the package
stays together amazingly well. Especially under circumstances when a
listener has the possibility to fully concentrate on hearing the
music's
tones and excellent nuances. The contents are closer to acoustic noise
than free jazz, and develop nicely: from nothing to nothing, constantly
changing yet essentially staying always the same.
There are nevertheless things to complain about, but not in the track
itself. The production style is very thin, meaning that the sound is
crisp and pure, but far too distant. This would be damn strong stuff if
it were compressed in a way that would give its assault the full force
it is capable of. As it is now, it's only thin soundscaping where you
can hear the structure, but not feel it.
Extremely interesting, but not nearly as powerful as it could have
been,
had it been finished in a different manner." - JiiTuomas
